Teach Portsmouth invites Cosham to support their schools at event

Teach Portsmouth is set to start the academic year with a tour of the waterfront city, kicking off with an information event and jobs fair at Cosham Community Centre on Wednesday 20 November 2024 from 10am - 11:45am and 12pm - 2pm.

The Teach Portsmouth Support and Teaching Assistant Jobs Fair presents a range of employment and training opportunities that could lead to supporting children, young people and families.

Schools, academies and colleges need patient and professional people who can help educate pupils. Those who attend the jobs fair will have the opportunity to learn about careers in education with exhibitors in attendance.

Alongside employers, adult education providers will be on hand to support attendees with information on apprenticeships and training options. If a confidence boost is required, The Learning Place provides a range of free courses designed to develop your skills when it comes to helping children.

Councillor Suzy Horton, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education at Portsmouth City Council said:

"Support roles in our schools are absolutely vital to ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive. From teaching assistants to administrative staff, these roles form the backbone of our education system, providing essential support to both teachers and students.

These are not just jobs; they are incredibly rewarding careers that make a real difference in children's lives every day.

We are proud to highlight these opportunities at this event, and I encourage anyone passionate about education to come along and explore how they can play a crucial part in shaping children's futures."

Those who attend will also have the opportunity to sign up to taster sessions with participating employers. Over the last academic year, 12 people have started a job in a school or become a volunteer, thanks to the scheme.

Rebecca Hardy, a teaching assistant at Mayfield School, works on a one-to-one basis with a pupil in year four. She attended a Teach Portsmouth event and was successful in getting a job.

During university, Rebecca worked part-time in HMV, while studying for a degree. After graduating, she decided to become a store manager with the company, where she worked for 12 years. Rebecca said:

"I really loved my time at HMV as a store manager. It was a career that spanned over a decade. When a change in circumstances meant I had to leave, I wanted to find a job that worked for me.

"I attended a Teach Portsmouth event where I met a range of schools who had different opportunities on offer. When I spoke to Mayfield School at the event, I knew the job was for me. I have now been at the school since September and love it!"

For those who have gained a qualification abroad and have questions about employment in the UK, Teach Portsmouth have partnered with Biscoes on a trial to offer free 10-minute consultations.

The consultations are designed to support those who are already living in Portsmouth and are able to work in a school. This will give one person the chance to ask one question during the consultation.

There is limited availability and time slots are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Once all consultations have been allocated, a waiting list will be implemented. When booking your ticket, please select the Biscoes consultation option and a member of the team will be in touch to arrange the consultation.
