Madison's journey into education was always a long-held dream. It wasn't until a Teach Portsmouth jobs fair where it became a reality. By attending a recruitment event, she was able to connect with schools, colleges and training providers who could support her into employment.

The Teach Portsmouth Jobs and Opportunities Fair on Wednesday 26 February 2025 is designed to help people find their perfect job. Madison shares her journey from navigating her options to starting a teaching assistant apprenticeship.  

What attracted you to work in a school?

I enjoy a dynamic environment where no two days are the same. Schools offer a lively, ever-changing atmosphere that attracted me to work in education. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities which keeps the work engaging and unpredictable.  

How did you find your current role? Did you attend a Teach Portsmouth event or taster session?

Prior to my role, I attended a Teach Portsmouth event, where I became aware that starting my career as a teaching assistant apprentice was the best option for me. Fortunately, I received the first job I applied for.  

What is the most rewarding thing about working in education?

The most rewarding aspect of working in education is seeing students grow, achieve, and overcome challenges. It brings immense satisfaction to know that you are positively impacting young people's lives.  

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in education?

My advice to someone considering a career in education is to build relationships not only with the students but also with colleagues and parents. Strong, positive connections create a foundation of trust, respect, and open communication, fostering a supportive and productive learning environment.

When you prioritise relationships, the entire school community benefits from a more collaborative atmosphere.
